February 10, 2025The latest episode of PhotowalksTV: All about where to go in San Diego for the best skyline views of the city, in beautiful Harbor Island.
If you’re looking for one of the best spots to capture San Diego’s dynamic skyline, look no further than Harbor Island. This tiny, picturesque stretch of land offers incredible waterfront views, a peaceful walking path, and prime opportunities for photography enthusiasts.
Whether you’re a jogger, cyclist, or simply someone who enjoys a scenic stroll, Harbor Island is a must-visit location in California’s second-largest city.
A Prime Location for Photography
Harbor Island is beloved for its unobstructed views of downtown San Diego, with passing sailboats and Coronado Island adding to the stunning backdrop. Few cities offer such a convenient location for capturing their downtown area without needing to cross a river or travel to another vantage point. In New York, for example, most photographers head to Brooklyn to shoot Manhattan, but in San Diego, you can simply park your car and start snapping.

A Brief History and Logistics
Harbor Island was created in 1961 alongside the larger Shelter Island, both built from dredged material to extend San Diego’s waterfront. It’s part of the Point Loma community, connected by a narrow strip of land, and just a stone’s throw away from major city attractions. The Cabrillo National Monument and Point Loma Lighthouse, popular among photographers, are just six miles from the hotels on Harbor Island. Meanwhile, downtown San Diego and Little Italy are less than a mile away, making this location ideal for visitors who want to explore the city.
Unlike many waterfront areas, Harbor Island has no residential homes—just a sprawling park, a marina filled with boats, and several upscale hotels. If you’re looking for a luxurious stay, the Sheraton San Diego recently underwent a major remodel in 2024 and offers some of the best views in the city.
The Best Photo Spots on Harbor Island
For the best photos of Harbor Island and the San Diego skyline, start at the dead-end behind the waterfront restaurants, where you’ll find a spacious parking lot. From there, you can capture city views, Coronado Island, and reflections of the skyline on the water. Many photographers like to set up their cameras between the restaurants, and the docks remain accessible in the early morning, even when the restaurants are closed.
While you won’t see the sun setting directly behind the skyline, you will witness a beautiful golden glow illuminating the buildings as the day fades. For an even better vantage point, the deck of the Sheraton offers a fantastic perspective.
Exploring Beyond Harbor Island
If you have extra time, consider venturing beyond Harbor Island to North Harbor Drive, which runs adjacent to the San Diego Airport. This mile-long seaside walk offers another scenic park, and if you follow the path to the end, you can cross under the bridge and find yourself on the opposite side of Shelter Island. Nearby, Liberty Station, a former naval facility, has been transformed into a bustling area filled with shops and restaurants, including Trader Joe’s, Five Guys, and the Liberty Public Market, a seven-day-a-week food hall with over 40 vendors.
