Big Sur, California Photowalks Travel Itinerary
July 2, 2024Park City Photowalk: Itinerary
July 5, 2024Nestled in the southwestern corner of the continental United States, Imperial Beach is a charming border town just five miles from Tijuana and about 15 minutes south of San Diego.
Despite its proximity to two bustling cities, Imperial Beach has a unique, laid-back vibe that sets it apart.
Day 1: Exploring Downtown and the Historic Pier
- Start Your Day at the Pier Plaza: Begin with a walk through the heart of Imperial Beach. The downtown area is compact and easy to navigate, featuring seven blocks of shops, cafes, and restaurants leading up to the historic wooden pier.
- The beach!: Take a peaceful walk along the sandy shores. Keep an eye out for dolphins and starfish that can often be seen near the pier.
- Surfing and Swimming: If you’re adventurous, try your hand at surfing. Just be sure to check with lifeguards regarding water safety, as the Tijuana River’s runoff can occasionally affect water quality. Critics say it can be very stinky at certain parts of the year.
- Grab Breakfast: Enjoy a leisurely breakfast at one of the local cafes, where you can soak in the relaxed atmosphere and maybe chat with some locals.
- Ye Olde Plank Inn: Take a moment to visit this local bar, where early risers gather to start their day with a drink and some socializing. It’s a great spot to experience the town’s community spirit.
Mid-Morning: Visit the Historic Pier
- Imperial Beach Pier: Constructed in 1909, the wooden pier is a focal point of the town. Take a leisurely stroll along the pier, and enjoy stunning views of both the Tijuana skyline and the San Diego skyline. The Pier offers fantastic photo opportunities. I especially like photographing her from the side with my phone.
Afternoon: Discover Local Art and Culture
- Surf Culture: As you walk around Imperial Beach, you’ll notice numerous nods to the local surf culture, from surf statues to whimsical designs embedded in the sidewalks.
Late Afternoon: Head to the Tijuana Estuary
- Tijuana River National Estuarine Research Reserve: Just a short walk from downtown, this estuary is home to 370 species of birds and offers long walkways with views into Mexico. It’s a birdwatcher’s paradise and an excellent spot for nature photography. For a closer look at Tijuana, get a shot of Mexico, believe it or not, from the estuary. Use your smartphone’s telephoto setting to capture the skyline.
- Phil the Barber: Stop by Phil’s barbershop for a chat. Phil is a local legend known for his friendliness and interesting stories. You might even walk away with a special souvenir from Tijuana.
Evening: Sunset at the Pier
- Sunset Views: Conclude your day with a spectacular sunset at the pier. The vibrant colors and reflections on the water make for breathtaking photographs.
